Current Freshman Blogger (2009-2010):
My name is Carolyn Pruitt and I’m part of the Tufts Class of 2013. I’m from Louisiana originally, but for the most part I’ve grown up in Austin, Texas. I can’t do it justice in this short bio, but Austin is a very unique city that had a significant effect on the kind of person I’m growing up to be. I’d love to stay there, but I have this theory that people should spend different stages of their life in different cities. For college I wanted to broaden my horizons and try something new. So I looked at a bunch of out of state schools, and visited a few, but once I started learning more about Tufts I knew it was the right school for me.
I mentioned in my first post that I want to major in Peace and Justice Studies and minor in Arabic, but everyone says your first choice is rarely what you end up with. Basically, I’m fascinated with government, politics, and diplomacy and I’m intrigued by subcultures of any kind, but I’m having trouble deciding on a major. Ultimately, I would love to work for the government or at an international aid, diplomatic, or human rights organization like Amnesty International.
I’m interested in getting involved with student government, and I’ve always wanted to work at a college radio station. Also, I think the ALLIES program sounds amazing. But it’s hard to know how I’ll be spending my time at school before I even get there.
I feel like I’ve struggled through this bio long enough. Sorry it’s not a clearer picture of me. I’d like to think I’m not quite this indecisive and ambiguous in real life, but I plan on coming back and updating this once I get a better idea of what I’ll be doing at Tufts.
Retired Freshman Blogger (2008-2009):
My name is Eileen Guo and I come to the Tufts Class of 2012 from a small town outside of Princeton, New Jersey. I was born in China and moved to the States when I was 4, and maybe because of this early move, I’ve always been interested in different cultures, countries, and lifestyles. I spent my senior year of high school in Spain through a program called School Year Abroad, and then took a gap year before coming to Tufts. 1 year, 1 earthquake, 6 countries, and numerous transcontinental flights later, I finally find myself on “the hill”. And after so much time off, I could not be more excited!
At Tufts, I major in International Relations, and am considering either double majoring or minoring – though I keep changing my mind as to what. Spanish? Sociology? The leadership studies minor? Or perhaps one of my own design (through Plan of Study), like Migration Studies?
In addition to admissions outreach, both through this blog but also as a tour guide, some of my other campus activities include Tufts Capoeira, which I’m founder and president of; various activities at the Institute for Global Leadership, such as EPIIC and ALLIES; Tufts University TV (being the evil villainous on a Heroes spoof to be aired); Tuftslife.com; etc.
So please feel free to ask me questions about anything and everything, but if you have any specific questions about IR, gap years, or any of the other things I’ve mentioned, shoot me an email or leave a comment!!
